UV systems

EFFECTIVE. CHEMICAL-FREE. SAFE.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a proven method for germicidal disinfection of water. At a wavelength of 254 nm in the UV-C range, it reliably destroys microorganisms by acting on organic substances such as DNA and amino acids without chemically altering the water. This effect is produced by low-pressure mercury lamps that are specially designed for the required UV-C wavelength.

Functionality and technical principles:

  • UV light with a wavelength of 254 nm destroys the genetic information of bacteria, viruses and other germs
  • Use of low-pressure mercury lamps to generate UV-C light
  • Important parameters such as light transmission or the spectral absorption coefficient (SAC) at 254 nm are required for the design of the UV system
  • Disinfection is carried out purely physically, without chemical additives

Advantages of UV disinfection:

  • No change in the taste, smell or chemical composition of the water
  • Environmentally friendly and free from by-products that can arise during chemical disinfection
  • Particularly suitable for the food and beverage industry and sensitive areas of application
  • Universally applicable in drinking water, service water, swimming pool and industrial systems

Regulatory requirements:

  • Since 1 January 2006, UV systems used in the drinking water sector have been subject to mandatory certification.
  • Systems must be tested and approved in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Regular maintenance and inspection of UV lamps and sensors are essential to ensure disinfection performance.

Areas of application:

  • Drinking water supply for households and municipalities
  • Food and beverage industry
  • Swimming pools and leisure facilities
  • industrial processes with high hygiene requirements
